Shakespeare KING HENRY IV: So shaken

Correct KING HENRY IV So shaken as we are so wan with care Find we a time for frighted peace to pant And breathe short-winded accents of new broils To be commenced in strands afar remote No more the thirsty entrance of this soil Shall daub her lips with her own children s blood Nor more shall trenching war channel her fields Nor bruise her flowerets with the armed hoofs Of hostile paces those opposed eyes Which like the meteors of a troubled heaven All of one nature of one substance bred Did lately meet in the intestine shock And furious close of civil butchery Shall now in mutual well-beseeming ranks March all one way and be no more opposed Against acquaintance kindred and allies The edge of war like an ill-sheathed knife No more shall cut his master Therefore friends As far as to the sepulchre of Christ Whose soldier now under whose blessed cross We are impressed and engaged to fight Forthwith a power of English shall we levy Whose arms were moulded in their mothers womb To chase these pagans in those holy fields Over whose acres walk d those blessed feet Which fourteen hundred years ago were nail d For our advantage on the bitter cross 1 Henry IV 1 1 Continue quiz gt Subscribe to the Newsletter Name Email

Vincent Black Shadow

quot Gonzo Music quot Rob and Chris Kirkham are hilarious And they play off each other in an interview as well as they play off each other on stage The pair comprise two of the three brothers that make up the male portion of the Vincent Black Shadow the third is Anthony on drums Rob and Chris play guitar and bass respectively The female contingent is composed of Cassandra on vocals and Mary on keys Their female vocalist landed them a slot on the Shiragirl Gritty in Pink stage at the Warped Tour but Rob and Chris are quick to point out that they don t fit the typical requirements needed to be in a girl band as well as to duck the quot punk cabaret quot designation that s been waved in their direction I caught up with the brothers backstage at the Warped Tour after they d played a set in 98-degree heat on a stage that was threatening to cave in in Despite it all they were relaxed and quite entertaining RC So you guys have a really interesting sound How would you describe it Rob I like to describe our music as Gonzo Music You know like Hunter S Thompson had Gonzo Journalism It s your own brand of writing that s what his was He didn t subscribe to any sort of set rules So nobody can tell us what to do Basically we play any type of song we want and do whatever we want RC So you re ducking the punk cabaret label Rob Yeah I don t know isn t cabaret a German type of drinking music with the lace and stuff I suppose I do like cabaret a lot I mean I like the movie and what s that quot All That Jazz quot and stuff I mean that stuff s cool and everything but that s not the only thing Chris I think we re more punk than most bands that are going by punk right now because we re actually not doing what everyone else is doing Rob That s what the punk ethic is Do your own thing Yet everyone here is doing everyone else s thing Well not everybody but a lot Chris No there s bands that aren t They re still the diamonds in the rough Rob The rough Chris Yes That s R-U-F-F Rob Ruff Chris Ruff Rob That s going to be my new rap group Diamonds in the Ruff RC How you liking Warped Tour Rob It s been great We ve climbed mountains and traversed great ravines in order to get here basically I mean our stage crashed a week ago I think I saw you in the audience and I mentioned that Chris See we re more punk than anybody Our stage keeps crashing and we have to build our stage every night and figure out what s going on Rob But otherwise up until that point and even still it s been a blast We ve been making a lot of new friends impregnating a lot of new girls Chris Conceptually speaking of course Rob Impregnating them with awesome music In their ears RC What are you guys travelling in Rob We re travelling on horseback for this tour It s a lot easier with them pulling the caravan Chris Staying true to the Canadian Mountie ethic Rob Yes and then actually someone came a long and said quot you re not riding horses you re just banging two coconuts together quot Seriously though we re sharing a bus with another band on the label So it s good in the sense that we re on a bus but it s so packed in there it feels like we re in a sardine can Chris It is pretty sweet though It s nicer than my apartment so I d rather stay on tour RC How d you guys end up on the Shiragirl stage or what was the Shiragirl stage now Gritty in Pink Rob Well Shira and Gritty in Pink is pretty much the same thing We ended up on that stage basically because we have technically two girls in the band Even though we have three guys the two girls denotes us as being a girl band Or a chick-fronted group We try to avoid that because it s ridiculous We play music Who cares who s singing So we ended up on that stage because of that because that s where they put you Chris They saw us in New Jersey Rob Yeah Shira saw us and invited us on Chris In my opinion they re subscribers to the real punk ethic because they make their stage every day and no matter how many times it crashes or breaks down they still show up with something so you gotta give them credit RC How are the crowds responding to you guys Rob They ve been really good in almost every single place we ve had a really good reaction Especially in like California and on the West Coast I find that in general the West Coast is just a lot more open I bet you anything it dates back to the genes in people You know the people in the west they came from the East Coast right The frontier land there was definitely a different type of people that wanted to experience new things so the West Coast was especially good and Texas that s like our strongest market But otherwise for the most part all of the shows have been awesome

Going to California: 49ers and the Gold Rush

Going to California 49ers and the Gold Rush Join the Discussion What do you think was the most important positive or negative contribution of the Gold Rush on American History Weigh In With Your Vote Related Resources bull California Gold Rush bull Westward Expansion From Other Guides Elsewhere on the Web bull Gold Rush bull The Discovery of Gold in California James Marshall found gold while working for John Sutter at his ranch in northern California on January 24 1848 He had been hired to build a mill for Sutter This place would enter American lore as Sutter s Mill Word quickly spread through California the rest of America and eventually the world and people flocked to California to make their fortune In fact according to some estimates the population increased by 86 000 people in two years Most of these treasure seekers left for California in 1849 hence our name for them 49ers Many of the 49ers themselves picked an appropriate name from Greek mythology Argonauts These Argonauts were in search of their own form of a golden fleece - wealth free for the taking The trek was arduous for those who came over land Many made their journey on foot or by wagon It could sometimes take up to nine months to get to California For the immigrants who came from across the ocean San Francisco became the most popular port of call In fact San Francisco s grew from about 800 in 1848 to over 50 000 in 1849 The first lucky arrivals were able to find nuggets of gold in the streambeds These people made quick fortunes It was a unique time in history where individuals with literally nothing to their name could become extremely wealthy The gold was free for whoever was lucky enough to find it It is no surprise that gold fever hit so heavily Yet the majority of those who made the trek out West were not so lucky The individuals who became the richest were in fact not these early miners but were instead entrepreneurs who created businesses to support all of the prospectors It is easy to think of all the essentials this mass of humanity would need in order to live Businesses sprang up to meet their needs Some of these businesses are still around today including Levi Strauss and Wells Fargo The individuals who made their way out West during the Gold Rush met with numerous hardships After making the journey they often found the work to be extremely hard with no guarantee of success Further the death rate was very high According to Steve Wiegard staff writer for the Sacramento Bee one in every five miners who came to California in 1849 was dead within six months Lawlessness and racism were rampant However the impact of the Gold Rush on American History cannot be overestimated The Gold Rush reinforced the idea of Manifest Destiny America was destined to span from Atlantic to Pacific and the accidental discovery of Gold made California an even more essential part of the picture California was admitted as the 31st state of the Union in 1850 But what happened to John Sutter Did he become extremely wealthy Let s look at his account By this sudden discovery of the gold all my great plans were destroyed Had I succeeded for a few years before the gold was discovered I would have been the richest citizen on the Pacific shore but it had to be different Instead of being rich I am ruined Because of the United States Land Commission proceedings Sutter was delayed in being awarded the title to the land which he had been given by the Mexican Government He himself blamed the influence of squatters people who immigrated to Sutter s lands and took up residence The Supreme Court eventually decided that parts of the title that he did have were invalid He died in 1880 having fought for the rest of his life unsuccessfully for compensation Name Email

Who and Whom

Let s face it is a problem word Nobody seems to be quite sure about its proper usage As a matter of fact some of the rules that have dictated its use in the past are now considered quot old fashioned quot and are commonly ignored The truth is very few people use in speech when it s technically correct Even scholars who know the rules don t always apply them It just sounds too puffy sometimes Examplejust sounds a little uptight doesn t it Most teachers will use the word in this case even if they know better Nonetheless the word still exists and some people do take all grammar rules very seriously Some college officials for example will want to see and hear excellent grammar in your communications It s well worth your while to understand the basic rules underlying the use of and Whom is used as an object Do you understand why is correct in one sentence and is correct in the other The answer is is always used as the subject of a sentence or clause and is always used as an object In the first sentence of the set above is the subject In the second sentence is the subject and is the direct object Notice in both sentences is the subject is the object of the verb recommend Whom is also used as the object of a preposition Prepositions include words like to for about under over of after and before Look at these examples The last piece of pie should go you see first I ll begin my letter with the phrase It May Concern I don t know the love letter came They fought do I enter the stage Do you think these sentence sound odd They do indeed That is exactly why the word will probably disappear from the English language one day It just sounds a little awkward in many circumstances even when it s technically correct So what can you do First of all consider your audience If you find yourself speaking to a person you d like to impress like an admission official from Harvard University for example then you should simply pause and think before you speak It won t sound strange Think about it many intelligent people pause a lot while they re talking They re thinking before they speak So if you re speaking in an important situation like the one above stop and think before using or Is it subjective case or objective you want to use If you re confused about subjects and objects and can t think fast when you find yourself speaking in public you can either avoid using and or you can go with your gut feeling and say whichever sounds better You ll probably be right You can also use this simple test in your head Silently replace the word with or to see which sounds better is the equivalent of subjective and is the equivalent of objective For instance if you want to decide which is correct in this sentence Re-arrange the sentence in your head so it will make sense using him or he You ll come up with the following choices is clearly better Therefore the correct word in the sentence above will be
